My mothers three year old Shih-tzu has a swollen eye and had some kind of discharge this morning. The area around the eye has been swollen for a few days, but now it seems to be getting worse. any idea's what could cause this to happen?

This swelling and discharge can have a lot of causes. First, he could have a bug bite or other allergic reaction going on. If this is the case, your vet might want to prescribe some benadryl to give him some relief. Second, he could have an eye infection or corneal abrasion. If the discharge from the eye is green or yellow, you need to go ahead and see your vet. Third, some parasites can cause eye issues so you should see your vet for a fecal to rule this out.

Eye health is very important so I would go ahead and see the vet with him.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: At this time the funds are not available to bring the dog to the vet. Is there some kind of homecare we can give him until we have the funds.

So i contacted my mother to see if what you suggested was of any use to her, and Harry the shih-tzu, won't let her flush his eye out with warm water or saline. Any suggestions on what to do.

His eye appears to be cloudy. Not the normal color for his pupil area. Red where it is normally white. Still swelling and still draining. He is rubbing his eye alot.

If it isn't an allergic reaction and we give Harry the beneadryl, will it harm him any?
