Question

my new rottie 160 pnds. 3 or 4 yrs old

Sent to Pet Experts October 27, 2005 4:49 p.m.

we just took in a full grown, pure breed rottie that's 3 or 4 years old, with possible arthritis or hip displasia, we'll be seeing the vet on saturday so we'll find out then. So far he's had a very mellow temperment, he doesn't even bark when someone's at the door. However, today I walked him and he must have sensed the fear or intimidation from 4 different passers by including 2 kids and immediately went for them barking, I had to hold him back and pull on his choke chain with all my might. This is the first time I've seen him even make a noise. I am 120 pounds and he's about 160, so I'm concerned. Is it too late for neutering?? I was told it could completely change a rotty in particular for the worse, especially the older they are. Is this true? Until today he had only gone after other dogs, the first night I had him, not expecting him to do this when he saw a dog, I slipped onto my back and he drug me feet first across the grass. He's very sweet, very mellow, obviously very protective, I just need to have some answers to these questions, being that he's so big. This is a populated neighborhood close to the DC area so whatever advice you can give us would be great. Thank you Sincerely, Bess
