Question

I have a horse that foundered severely during her pregnancy

Sent to Pet Experts October 23, 2005 9:26 p.m.

I have a horse that foundered severely during her pregnancy a year ago. I have been seeking different avenues of treatment for her and got her to where her weight was/is up, but can not walk on the one hoof due to atrophy and arthritis in the joint above the coronary. 24 hours ago, she had been down and can't get up. I have food and water in front of her and her appetite was good until tonight. Her back legs are stretched out like she is stiff and muscle spasmatic. Put a call in to the vet and they say that I have to wait until tomorrow morning to see if she makes it.

Do you have another vet that you can call and get a second opinion from? I would be very concerned that she will colic if she's laying down and eating and not moving around at all. I would go ahead and get a second opinion and go from there.

Do you have any bute on hand or any other pain reliever?

I have a call in to 2 vets. One has not called back yet. We have tried to get her up and can not. I have dealt with colic and she is not even eating right now. As for the bute, she can not have any more bute due to being on bute too long, the vet will not prescribe it. As I stated earlier, her legs seem to be cramping and are somewhat "stretched out" as though she can't get her legs situated properly to even get up. I have massaged her hind legs to get the blood flowing thinking that it would intimidate her to get up, but to no avail....she just stretches her legs out more and won't get up.
