Myu wife and I inherited out daughter's pit bull/Jack

Sent to Pet Experts October 23, 2005 11:33 a.m.

Myu wife and I inherited out daughter's pit bull/Jack russell mix female. This dog is hyper to the max when around people. When left alone she stays relatively calm, but get close and she'll run into you at full speed, jump up and sctrach with her toenails and otherwise just is unmanageable. We have 14 acres that we're building a house on and tie her to a 30' leash when the workers are there otherwise we let her run loose which she loves. One Vet we talked to suggested giving her benedryl (SP?) to calm her down but this had no effect at all. Any suggestions?

This breed is famous for their energy!

I would suggest, before you try any medication, that you start obedience class with her. This will give you both some confidance and will teach you how to handle her. For the time being, when she jumps on you, turn your back on her. Don't speak to her at all. She's trying to get a reaction from you and doesn't care if it's a good one or a bad one. Any reaction is attention and this is not what you want to do at this point.

Benadryl is not depressant enough to help in your situation. There ARE medications that can help but I really think that your problem is behavioral instead of medical.

Let me know if you still have questions.
