While cutting my six year old Shepard/mix I found 2 lumps ...

Sent to Pet Experts October 17, 2005 1:56 p.m.

While cutting my six year old Shepard/mix I found 2 lumps in her breast area, and one between her chest. I also notice a bump on her top rear(near her top tail-rear). Thought it was a tick, but its not.Do you think she has develop cancer. Her behavior has not change any...she is full of energy!
In the pass she has always had seizer during the summer months, maybe one every other week lasting for two-five minutes. Vet recommend NOT putting her on any med's,because the seizers only seem to hit when it was hot.She also had a thyroid problem about four years ago. I gave her the med's to treat her thyroid problem, and it clear her up. She has been off the thyroid med's for over three years. What step should I take to get her the right treatment for the lumps I found on her, and do you honestly think it might be cancer? Please write back to czone11@aol.com   Thank you for your time!
Sincerely Tracey

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Lipomas (fatty tumors) are common in this breed so I would not get overly concerned right away about your findings. They are generally harmless.

Since there are lumps around the mammaries, you need to go ahead and see the vet for a fine needle aspiration. The vet will insert a fine needle into the lump and draw back some cells. Then they can tell you what you're dealing with.

In a lot of cases, it's just fatty tumors and they can be left alone. In other cases, further treatment is needed.

But, no matter what, go ahead and get in for that appointment!

Let me know if you have more questions.
