my 7 month old female pomerian has been vomiting for 4 days. I haven't changed her food. When she vomits, I look for anything out of the ordinary that she might have eaten, but there's nothing. I think she might be going into her first heat. Would that cause her vomiting? She has intermittent diarrhea. Also, she sometimes eats her poop (which she's done since I got her in June, but had never vomitted). Could that be causing it? Is there anything I can give her? What should I feed her? She is drinking water but I'm worried about dehydration. She hasn't been around any other animals. Thank you!

A heat cycle should not cause vomiting.

You first need to determine the cause for the vomiting. If your dog has not seen the vet recently for a fecal exam, I would do this first to rule out parasites as the cause.

Dogs can also have vomiting issues and diarrhea because of intestinal obstructions or other causes. If you know that she swallowed a rawhide or other object (is she a chewer), you need to see the vet as soon as you can. Obstructions cannot be treated at home and most dogs cannot pass them on their own.

Sometimes, this is caused by a simple parasite problem or coccidia or giardia. You can find out with a simple fecal exam.

Dogs usually do well a bland diet of only boiled hamburger and white rice and it helps to settle the stomach . If the vomiting has subsided, you can start to add in her regular food.

If you supect that she is dehydrated, you can give her pedialyte or gatorade instead of water to increase her hydration.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: About 2 weeks ago, I got her some small rawhide bones and always made sure that when they got soft, I would throw them away. I never left her alone with the rawhide. She isn't a big chewer (althought she just lost all her baby K-9 teeth and the adult ones are growing in. I feed her Hill's Prescription Diet I/D Turkey and rice formula. Yesterday, I gave her some Campbell's Chicken and Noodle Soup - Only the Broth (no noodles). She was able to keep that down. Thank you for your prompt response. I can put down another deposit, if needed. I really appreciate your help! Kim

She had a fecal exam in July, when she got her rabies shot and check-up.

If there is an intestinal obstruction, they will usually do surgery to remove the obstruction and repair it. The need for this can be confirmed with a simple x-ray which is not very expensive.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: Thank you, Tammy! I was getting very concerned tonight. Since it's Sunday, I can't take her into the vet until tomorrow. It's times like this that I'm glad that the internet offers services like this. Thank you for your dedication! Kim
