Am thinking of making a career change. I've been a technical writer for 20 years, but want to do meaningful work. Have always had animal companions and love working with them. What are your thoughts on retraining as a vet tech. I want a challenging job, and am aware I'd be taking a huge cut in pay. That's ok, 'cause my kids are grown and I have no huge debts.

Believe me as someone who has read technical manuals hoping desperately for help that is meaningful work!
You might want to talk to the folks who are vet techs at clinics near you. I know there are professional journals that can help and of course training classes.
Its not all fun work and you do have to deal with sadness along the way. Not all owners are good ones and not all animals survive etc.
There are a variety of levels of vet tech skills and you can do work ranging from cage cleaning to lab testing within a small clinic.
It requires physical as well as emotional abilities.

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: I appreciate the response, which was appropriate to my question. This was my first experience with this site, and if I were to reask the question, I'd be much more specific in hopes I'd get an answer that was more specific as well. My fault for being flip and vague.
