I have a 2.5 year beagle dam and her pups are now 8 weeks old. We began weaning almost 4 days ago and the dam is so engorged. What can we do to relieve the discomfort? Are there any health risks with this condition?

I would keep a close eye out for mastitis. This is a breast infection and you might see hard, tight, hot breasts as a result of it. If you suspect this, you should see your vet right away.

Engorgement is a natural part of the weaning process. Don't try to express any milk to give her some relief because this will just make the process take longer. You can, however, place a warm towel on her breasts to help with pain.
