10 mo old neutered male Westie: diarrhea/soft stools for about 2 weeks; 2-3 lb. weight loss; reduced appetite; not as playful now; no help after giving Hills Prescription Diet and Metronidazole 1/4 tab -2X daily. What do you recommend?

REPLIED Check Mark

Have you seen the vet for a fecal exam to rule out parasites, giardia and coccidia? If not, this should be step one. I would also change his diet to something even more bland. Boiled chicken and white rice (no bones, no skin) works well. This should help to firm up his stools. When the stools are normal again, you can start to add in his regular meals little by little.

Let me know if you still have questions.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Since you are STILL seeing the diarrhea, I would ask for a repeat fecal just in case they missed whip worms or something else that's hard to see in the float.

If that proves to be negative, I would then discuss irritable bowel syndrome with the vet and see what his next recommendation is for treatment.

I would also go ahead and try the bland diet that I mentioned above.

Let me know if you want to discuss this further.
