why does my 24lb. constantly meow for more food?

My 6 yr. old cat who I have had for 5 years and weighs 24 lbs constantly meows if I walk away for 5 minutes even. He immediately gets up and follows me to wherever part of the house I am at and meows until I pick him up or give him food. Is he just doing it for attention? How do I get him to stop eating so much? Also, how much is the right amount to feed him. I work about 12 hours daily, so dont get to spend that much time with him.
