Question

loose stool /slight blood

Sent to Pet Experts September 07, 2005 12:15 p.m.

sophie (the pet) had blood in her stool(this is
what the vet said, he is a new vet for us, i didn't
see blood in her stool) over a month ago, he
did blood work, all her blood work was perfect,
he put her on penicillin for 10 days. she was
fine, we took her to italy for 2 weeks and had a
great time she was healthy and active, we
came back on aug. 21st. she's been fine
except 3 days ago she had a stool with
mucus and yesterday there was a hint of red
blood on her wee wee pad, i think it was from
when she cleans herself after a bowel
movement. sophie is like my child and i want
to care for her as best i can, but i don't want to
be riped off with lots of tests etc. if it could be
something we can treat at home.

REPLIED Check Mark

I would take a stool sample to the vet and have it checked for parasites such as worms or coccidia or giardia. Most vets will do a fecal check for you pretty inexpensively and offer the meds needed if its a parasite problem.
Changes in water and potty locations and even food treats can lead to parasite infection so its worth checking this out.
Hope this helps you!

nancy, thank you for your response, i have
meds for worms which my vet gave me before
we went to italy, would you recommend giving
it to her now? she did go out of doors while we
were in italy for the first time, would it be
irresponsible for me to try that and keep an
eye on her?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

I'd check a stool sample before doing the meds as the meds could mask a protozoan parasite which the meds won't totally kill.
Remember meds for worms are poisons so if there is something else going on the wormer may impact that negatively.
I prefer to have the vet check the stool (just bring in a fresh sample shouldn't be expensive) before administering poisons.
You can try it and see if that solves the problem though.
