Vomitting Pappillon
Sent to Pet Experts August 31 08:48 AM

Our almost 2 year old Papillon has been vomiting once or twice a day for about a week now. We were just getting ready to take her to the vet and thought we might try asking some experts first. We feed her Nutro Lamb and Rice (1/2 cup in the morning, 1/2 cup at dinner time) and she has been on that for over a year with no side effects. Her treats are Three Dog Barkery cookies, maybe 6 a day. She does not get people food. She is "pooping" and "peeing" regularly; occasionally she gets lethargic but she is also very willing to play, take walks, get belly rubs etc.Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

Dogs can develop sensitivities to foods so do not rule that out. You might try seeing if skipping the treats resolves the problem for example.
Another possibility is that the dog swallowed a non food item that is irritating its intestinal tract causing the vomiting. Think if you are missing any toys, socks, bones, balls etc. With my dog it was a latex squeaky toy that went down easily and filled with gastric juices and could not be vomited up or passed through. Made her sick until we got it out of her.
Dogs can get ulcers - heliobacter infections can cause them and their irritation can cause vomiting.
Your vet may want to do an x-ray to check and see if there is a problem visible that way.
You might want to look at food ingredients in comparison with other foods if a food sensitivity is the suspected problem. You can do that here

compare your food to Wellness or California Natural for example.
Hope this helps you!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: If we stop the treats how much time should we wait before having her checked by the vet. So far we have given her breakfast (1/2 normal amount) and she has kept that down.

We have not given her any treats, tail is wagging, she wants to play.

When she was very sick over the weekend I gave her about 5mg of Pepsid to try and reduce the acid. Yesterday, however, she vomited three times yesterday but nothing today.

I would have her checked by the vet anyway as this could be a problem with coccidia or giardia a swallowed toy an ulcer etc.
If the vet clears her of all problems then I'd think about food sensitivity.
If stopping the treats solves the problem then you might want to look at the treat ingredients and find some that don't have those to use as treats for her.
She may just have had a bug that she is getting over too. If anyone slipped her some deli meat say or licked a meat wrapping paper etc she could have picked up one of the infections found in them.
You could wait a day or so and see if the no treats rule resolves the problem as she doesn't seem sick now.
