Question

Watery swelling in neck

Sent to Pet Experts August 28, 2005 11:20 p.m.

My 10 year old whippet-sized dog (a mutt) awoke this morning very lethargic. She will drink and eat but is very depressed. About 10 hours ago I noticed a slight watery swelling in her neck. She went to the vet 5 hours ago, no diagnosis ($250 worth of no diagnosis). The watery thing has gotten bigger and firmer just in the last 6 hours, but it's not a hard lump, and she does not feel pain if I manipulate it. The vet is checking for lymphoma, but there are no hard swellings. I gave her an antiinflammatory, the area is still watery, around the area where a goiter would be. she is lethargic, depressed and sleepy. She had a complete bloodwork done in June and was OK, normal. We live in Denver, CO, the dog only goes outside to pee or poop. clean environment, no bugs. All ideas will be appreciated. Thank you.

Try using a warm compress on the site of the swelling to see if that brings it to a head. Possibly it could be an abcess infection and using a warm damp towel might help it come to a head and drain faster. If there was any increase in the white blood cell count that might point to this being an infection.

Consdier if there is any chance of a bee sting or a spider bite etc too.
Hope this helps you!
