Question

eyes

Sent to Pet Experts August 28, 2005 12:03 a.m.

My 10 yr old cat has periodic redness of the skin around her eyes. What is it? What can I do for her? How can I prevent this from occurring?

My cat is bothered by the red skin around her eyes. She has had this off and on over two years...Sometimes both eyes; sometimes one. It has been a long time like off and on for a couple years that this has happened around her eyes. She rubs her eyes with her paws/front leg when they are red.

I want to stop this from happening. What can I do. And how can I prevent it? What is it?

Cats will sneeze and get snuffy or might have reddened eyes because of allergies, upper respiratory infections, colds....

If there is mucus from the nose or eyes, she has an infection and you need to see the vet for antibiotics.

If you suspect allergies are the cause, you should try to eliminate (or reduce) dust and dirt in the home, stop using carpet powders and get rid of other allergens that might be the culprit.

You might also want to talk with your vet about using an antihistamine to help during allergy season.

For tonight, you can use pediatric nasal saline (not adult!) in each nostril to help clear the mucus, if she has any.

I hope this helps!

Let me know if you have more questions.
