Question

Nervous or Sick?

Sent to Pet Experts August 25, 2005 11:43 a.m.

my ten year old choc. lab has been clinging to me, shaking, trembling, panting. I am wondering if it is due to separation anxiety (my husband is often traveling) or possibly pain or some physical reason. She is getting worse by the day, but often has several hours a day when she is just "normal." Help!

This kind of anxiety can often be linked to a problem with the thyroid in dogs. Labs are particularly likely to have thyroid problems as its an inherited issue.
Pain can of course cause this too.
However older dogs can also suffer from cognitive disorder and there are meds that can help with that.
If your dog has thunder phobia and its been storming in your area this can be from that too.
My thunder phobic dog has over the years started to generalize his anxiety to simply humidity making him anxious. Melatonin has helped with that. You can read about that here
www.ygrr.org/doginfo/behavior-phobia.html
When you see behavior changes like this a good idea is a vet visit and with an older dog a geriatric vet visit with bloodwork might pinpoint problems and get the dog meds that can help her feel better and you worry less.
Hope this helps you!

Thanks...the thunder phobia is not a problem with her. Unlike other labs I have raised, she is not sensitive to the thunder (although she leaves the room when we turn on the TV!) Should I have her blood tested for thyroid problems? As I mentioned, she seemed so much better when my husband was home. She is a very sensitive dog and I suppose it could even be a combination of anxiety and some physical problem. She was checked out for her annual physical last week and her vet found her to be in terrific condition for her age. Since this has been an on and off problem with her, what is your opinion on mild sedatives for the times when she is most upset?
