why is my cat meowing at night? it seems as though it starts when
we need to sleep at night.

You may want to have your cat checked for kidney disease or thyroid problems. For some reason these can make a cat yowl at night.
The cat may also be 'calling' seeking you if he or she wonders where you are.
But if this is new behavior I'd suggest a vet check up to see if there is a medical issue.
