Question

Weight loss

Sent to Pet Experts August 06, 2005 1:38 a.m.

We have an 11 yr. old daschound and she has been over weight for the last 9 yrs. She has recently lost enough weight to where we can see her ribs. She has really blood shot eyes and they have a light green discharge that we wipe off daily. She is an outside dog in a back yard with concrete and an in ground pool. Can you give us any suggestions? Thank you April

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Its time for a geriatric check up of your pet. The eyes sound like a serious eye infection is hurting her. The weight loss could be from pain or parasites or diseases of older dogs such as heart disease, liver problems, kidney disease or issues such as Cushings disease or diabetes.
You can read about Cushings here

and diabetes here

The vet will do an exam and probably also need to do bloodwork.
Many of the problems older pets get are easily treated with inexpensive medications.
Hope this helps you!
