Question

Possibly sick Italian Greyhound

Sent to Pet Experts July 31, 2005 12:35 a.m.

I have Italian Greyhound and she feels really warm to the touch on her chest and neck. Her gums are also very, very, red and when I push on them they bleed. My dog has always been very healthy...could these be symptoms of an illness?

Your dog may have gingivitis or gum inflammation/infection. Normal gums are bubbble-gum pink (or black pigmented in some cases) and shouldn't bleed. The inflammation may make her neck a little warm. Do her teeth have a lot of tartar build-up? Is she feeling ill otherwise? She should go in to your vet to get this checked out. She may just need a good dentistry where they will scale the tartar away, polish the teeth and check for any bad teeth. She may be put on a course of antibiotics to help any infection around the gumline.

Thank you for your answer. She does not have a lot of tarter build up. I brush her teeth twice a day...but I did just find out from my husband that while I was in Las Vegas last week ( I just got back yesterday) that she "ate" a wicker dog basket. That would explain a lot. I will take her in to get checked out just in case.

THank you again
