My 12 yr. 3 mo. spaded German Shepard Sasha was diagnosed by her vet with perianal fistulas. We put her on a strict IVD fish/potato diet which seems to helped somewhat with the licking and defacation. Her vet recommended us to a surgical specialist who wants us to put her cyclosporin and cephalexin for 4 weeks, recheck and either remove anal sacks or continue drugs for two weeks and then remove anal sacks. Said he would not do surgury for the perianal fistulas. My question is: do you think it is a good idea to perform any surgury on this old of an animal. My concern is the proposed cure could be worse than the existing problem.
