Question

swollen paw pads/not urinating

Sent to Pet Experts July 20, 2005 2:31 p.m.

The pads of my cats paws periodically become swollen. She will also at times seem to go for days without urinating (not always easy to tell since she is an inside/outside cat), and then she'll urinate a lot at once. Swollen paws seem to correlate with not urinating. Could there be a connection? What might this be?

This could be kidney issues or partial blockage of the urinary pathway from stones or infection.
If the kidneys cannot rid the body of excess fluids that can cause limb swelling.
Heart disease can cause that too - if the heart is not pumping right the kidneys cannot expel excess fluids.
Some viral diseases can also impact circulation in the cat.
The next time this happens I'd get her into the vet so he or she can see exactly the problem you see. The vet can palpate for a full bladder and see if there is a blockage problem. Shifting bladder stones for example could cause this.
You may want to have the vet see your cat sooner than this to check for heart or kidney issues or bladder stones etc.
Hope this helps you!
