Question

colic mare

Sent to Pet Experts July 08, 2005 8:11 a.m.

We have a 12 yr mare that has had colic for the past 3 weeks. I have treated her at first with belladona and then the last week with nux v. This seemed to help, then she started thrashing is her stall again. She is not drinking enough water, barely a guart or 2 aday. We've been wetting her food and hay and giving her corn oil as per the vet we've had out 3 times.(twice in one day) Can you give me any help? Thanks, Elaine

Elaine,
Try salting her food to encourage water consumption. You can use regular table salt or buy loose mineralized salt from your feed dealer. Also do not feed her hay off the ground as they pick up sand and have sand colic. You can also feed metamucil to her to help with his.. Mine don't like the orange flavor but will eat the regular. I top dress it on their feed. Cheaper than Sand Clear ir simular products. I will assume you have had her on a regular deworming program. IF not, then you need to deworm her immediatley and do it regularly. Your vet can advise you to the appropiate schedule and rotation of wormers for your area. I have mine on a daily dewormer and still give them ivermectrin 2 times a year.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have further questions.

Viv,
Thanks for getting back to me so soon. My husband
wanted me to tell you that it's probably not sand colic since we're in northeast Ohio and she doesn't eat off the ground. We will try the salt and the Metamucil. The last time the vet was here, he said the next course of action would be to consider that she might have ulcers. She did drink more water today than she has in over a week. We also feed unsweetened beet pulp w/ a lot of water. She seems to like the new fresh hay we just put in the barn a few days ago as opposed to the year old hay that was in the barn. She was constipated last week and the vet had to clean her out manualy. She's been defacating well since then.
Do you use any homeopathy on your horses?
Thanks again,
Elaine
