Question

5 lb Maltese throwing up, diarrhea

Sent to Pet Experts July 03, 2005 9:06 p.m.

My 5 lb Maltese is very sick. It has been a recurring illness. Some kind of stomach intestinal thing. Could be cancer. She is throwing us frothy white and slimy yellow also diarrhea with mucus. The Vet coats her stomach. Do you have any idea what he coats it with? She was taking Amoxi drops .7cc. Is there anything over the counter to substitute? Can I give here Pepto Bismol? Of course it's a holiday weekend and I have to get her through to Tuesday with as little discomfort as possable. Oh, and she is 17 1/2 years old but still beautiful.
Is there any kind of pain killer if she becomes very uncomfortable.
Thank you!

Amoxi drops are an antibiotic so there are no over the counter remedies that you can use. They only come by prescription.

I would suggest that you change her diet for the rest of the weekend to a diet of ONLY boiled chicken ( no bones, no skin ) and white rice. Don't give treats, table scraps or other food. Only feed her the chicken mixture. Baby food in jars works well, too. Just be sure to choose a food with no garlic and no onions.

Your vet might recommend using some tagamet to fight any acid reflux that is causing a problem. I can't tell you the dosage for a dogs so small but your vet can tell you what to use over the phone.

I hope that this helps. If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask!

Customer (name blocked for privacy) is not eating (not even chicken & rice). She is very skinny. I know this is serious. I'm just trying to get her through the Holiday with optimal comfort. She is taking Pepcid AC.
1. Will Pepto Bismal help?
2. Any thing for pain if she becomes very uncomfortable?
3. I have a prescription of nitrofurantoin. Would that help her?
I'm just trying to get her through until we can go to the Vet Tuesday.

I would be afraid to use Pepcid and Pepto Bismal.

Aspirin can be used as a short term anti-inflammatory if you don't have anything else. You can read about its usage and dosage info here:

Dog Aspirin

I hope that this helps more.
