Question

Shedding and potty problems

Sent to Pet Experts June 22, 2005 5:25 p.m.

Our cat is going to the bathrooom (#2) right outside of his litter box. He is also going #1 in differnt places in the house. We took him to the vet and they are treating them for a UTI. Well, ever since the vet, he is losing his hair...shedding extremely bad. So then when he cleans himself he licks all this hair up and ends up puking up all the time. Would it benefit to get our cat shaved so he isn't getting all that hair in his system? Also, would his going # 2 outside his litter box be from his UTI or would there be a different reason? Thanks!

Yes. The UTI probably caused some pain while in the litter box so now he is hesitant to go in it. Cats don't realize that it's the UTI and not the box that caused it. This will improve with time and patience on your part.

And, yes, I would recommend shaving him for the summer if this is an issue. Hair can cause an intestinal obstruction, particularly if he is losing as much as you say he is.

You might also want to talk with the vet about using an antihistamine to control some of the hair loss if you suspect that it's caused by allergies.

Let me know if you still have questions.
