Question

questioning diagnosis

Sent to Pet Experts June 11, 2005 8:26 p.m.

my m.schnauzer 1 yr old had rectal bleeding wed. and I rushed him to an er hospital.Within the 3 hrs. of this entire ordeal he was going down fast. They did bloodwork, an xray, and all they said is he was stressed and maybe didnt like bad weather. they kept him overnight gave him an iv and then discharged with antibiotics and something to soothe his stomach. They told me he could die from this if he didnt get treatment. They check for pancreatitis and he didnt have this. I took him to my vet the following morning and he was feeling much better but my vet didnt sound convinced about him being stressed. He did say it looked like he had a few whip worms and gave him 3 days of treatment for this. I have a 5 yr old son, birds, other dogs and this dog has never been stressed that I could tell. They said this could possibly recur. It was a terrible experience resulting in a bill for over $5oo and I do not want my dog to go thru this again if possible. They called it hgb? sorry, but I dont remember the letters exactly. H...?? we had a storm today and he has been fine. so I dont think this was the problem. I love this dog.He is like a child to me, can you please give me some advice?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

HGB stands for hemoglobin and you can read about normal values here
www.thepetcenter.com/exa/nv.html
It sounds like they suspected Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis or HGE as a possible problem
You can read about that here
http://www.pethealthcare.net/html/body_canine_hemorrhagic_gastroenter.html
and here

Unfortunately in my experience too emergency vet clinics can be very pricy and leave you unsure that they did the right thing or made the right diagnosis. However they DID save your dog and I'm betting that makes the price worth it.
Work with your own vet on prevention and home care and see if that keeps the problem from ever happening again.
If there is a possibility of say thunder phobia check out using melatonin to treat this with your vet. You can read about that here
www.ygrr.org/doginfo/behavior-phobia.html
Hope this helps you!
