Question

died after bath

Sent to Pet Experts June 06, 2005 1:23 p.m.

My cat Sunny was having skin issues. At first, Licking off all his fur. Then I noticed an area of a black looking rash. Yesterday, I brushed him and that seemed to bother him. He appeared to be getting bitten or something. Running around and stopping and biting his fur and licking. I decided to give him a bath. I used bio Guard shampoo for pets. He was not happy with the idea and I had to keep a firm grip on him. But as it went seemed to settle down and let me rinse the soap off. I them wrapped him up in towels and towel dried him. He seemed ok. I let him go and went to go get a couple more dry towels. When I came back and picked him up he let out a yeow and postured like in a fetal position pulling his limbs in. He took one big breath and then died in my arms. I called the shampoo compary farnam and they said their are no pesticides in the shampoo. I noticed his tongue turned black. What do you think happened? I had given him a bath before and it was fine.

It might have been the stress of the bath that triggered this. It sounds to me like your cat may have had a heart condition, or thrown a blood clot, or if he was having trouble urinating had a blockage that caused him to pass away. An increase in blood pressure from the stress or warmth of the bath might have triggered movement of a clot or a heart attack.
The dark discoloration of the tongue usually indicates oxygen lack which goes along with a heart issue or a blockage from a blood clot.
The only way you might be able to learn what happened for sure is to have your vet do a necropsy (like a human autopsy) to see if they can determine cause of death.
I'm sorry for your loss!
