We have an 8 year old dog that currently doesn't have any symptoms indicative of liver failure. However, recent blood work showed elevations in her ALT and alkaline phosphatase. An ultrasound found that there were nodules on the liver. The vet recommended a biopsy to determine if it's a cyst, a benign tumor, or cancerous. The vet seemed to feel that it is cancerous. We opted not to do the biopsy since the prospect of cancer would be hard to accept and that it may not be treatable anyway. We inquired if we can give her the antibiotics and medication in case it is not cancerous. She prescribed a 3-week course of antibiotics and Hepogen C along with vitamin E and SAM-E, but indicated that it may not help. She also prescribed L/D by Hills. The vet seemed to think that it is cancerous based on the ultrasound. We don't know if we're doing the right thing, because we feel she is young, but we don't want to put her through pain and experimentation if it might not work anyway. I've heard that this maybe due to giving her table scraps. Is that true? Also, is it possible for her to have liver cancer if she doesn't have any symptoms. How common is liver cancer among dogs of that age. Please advise
