Question

dry eye

Sent to Pet Experts May 23, 2005 8:10 p.m.

My dog has chronic dry eye syndrome and is currently being seen by a veterinary opthamologist. She is using two different drops to help the symptoms: Gentamycin for a bacterial infection and Cyclosporin for gland stimulation. However in between doses she is still battling with dry eyes. I know that this medication takes as much as 3 months for improvement but I wanted to know if I could give her an eye lubricant (OTC rewetting drops) intermittently to help relieve these symptoms. Thanks!

You should be able to use normal saline to provide moisture to the eyes but don't do so unless you check with your vet first.  It might counteract the effectiveness of the meds that you are already using.

I would give my vet a call and ask.  You might even be able to get the advice over the phone and avoid the cost of an office visit.

Let me know if you still have quesitons.
