Question

Swollen Leg on sh*tzu

Sent to Pet Experts May 23, 2005 1:48 p.m.

I have a sh*tzu that is 16 years old. He has heart disease with a heart mumur at 4. He has lost a lot of his hair and his legs look like chicken legs. A couple of months ago, he had a skin growth I guess of old age and he riped it off causing it to be an open large sore that keeps bleeding and now his paw and leg is swollen. What can I do to stop the swollen leg because he can't walk on it. Please help, I do not want to put him to sleep because of his leg since he is still alert and eating and drinking fine.

At this age, he could be having a diabetic reaction to the wound and that might be why it is not healing.

Because of the swelling and the fact that he can't walk on it, you need to see the vet immediately.

At this age, you do not want to take any chances.

Let me know if you still have questions.

No, it's not. I'm having a difficult time with this. He was not just my dog but my son. I baby him so much and not having his with me is a pain I can't explain.

Is it wrong for me to go through this? I still hold his blanket which has his hair on it and cry and cry when I get home.

No.  This is perfectly normal.  You have to grieve and to recover and you have to do it in your own way.

Do you know the story of the rainbow bridge?  If not, you might find some comfort in in.  If you don't know it, let me know and I'll share it with you.
