Question

FELINE ILLNESS

Sent to Pet Experts May 21, 2005 7:26 p.m.

My cat has lost a lot of weight - 20# down to 12# - but still eats everything in sight. He has begun to throw up dark brown liquid. He has also started eating my plants - one is a philadendron, which I know is poisonous, and the other is a green plant which I don't know the name of. He has never done this until recently. He is 13, eats and drinks well, still uses the little box. I have had him tested to parasites and thyroid, which were both negative. I need some answers to stop the brown stains he is making on my carpet, couch and floors. please help!! Renee

This could be a simple case of reflux. You should see the vet Monday to find out for sure. If this is the case, your vet can prescribe an antacid that will help a great deal.

Until then, you can use a dose of hairball remedy right before meals. This coats the throat and helps with acid build up.

You will also want to feed the cat several small meals a day and see if it helps. Jarred baby food works well and is mild enough to soothe the stomach. Try to stick to chicken/rice or another bland food with no garlic or onions.

Your vet might want to prescribe tagamet to help with the reflux.

Let me know if you still have questions.
