I OWN A RED EARED SLIDER (TURTLE) AND HE STOPPED EATING ...

Sent to Pet Experts February 01, 2006 10:13 p.m.

I OWN A RED EARED SLIDER (TURTLE) AND HE STOPPED EATING AROUND 4 DAYS AGO. HE IS STILL A BABY (ABOUT THE SIZE OF A HALF DOLLAR) AND WAS EATING TURTLE PELLETS AND COOKED CHICKEN, AND SOMETIMES RAW GROUND BEEF. HE NEVER WOULD EAT VEGGIES. NOW HE WILL NOT EAT ANYHTING . HE SHED SOME NECK SKIN A FEW DAYS AGO AS WELL. WHAT IS GOING ON IN YOUR OPINION? ALSO, IS THE TEMP. OF THE WATER IMPORTANT AT THIS STAGE OR IS ROOM TEMP STILL OK? THANKS...FROM Customer (name blocked for privacy)@yahoo.com

The water temperature is as important as the ambient room temp and will affect appetite.

What temp do you keep the water at? It should be around 78-80F. The room temp shouldn't drop below 72-75F with a basking spot in the enclosure of at least 88-90F.

Are you providing full spectrum or UVA/UVB lighting?

Plant matter should make up at LEAST 45-50% of a RES diet. What types of veggies have you tried feeding him?

Does he show any other symptoms of possible illness? (cloudy, closed or swollen eyes; swollen cheeks; open mouth breathing; bubbly mucous around the nose or mouth; runny stools; loss of appetite; listlessness; spots appearing on plastron (bottom shell), carapace or body; soft shell or excessive shedding?)
