Dehumidfier & Lop Eared Rabbit

Sent to Pet Experts September 02 03:36 PM

I am just sick. I have a lop rabitt which I keep in the livingroom of my walkout basement home. He is 6 years old and was a classroom pet in my elementary classroom. I have discovered that my basement shower is leaking under the floor and caused my hardwood flooring to cupp and raise up. My contractor suggested that I get a dehumidfier and set it to 50% and put it in the bedroom with an electric fan running shut the door and see if this helps. When the insurance inpector came he torn off some of the panneling and told me that I had mold. The entire basement stunk from his tearing the panelling offf. There is a direct connection between the discovery of the shower leak damage and the health of my lop. My lop died three days later. I have now read on the internet that rabitts are very sensitive to humidy. Exactly what happend to cause my perfectly healthy 6 year old lop to die? The bedroom was off of the living room where the rabitt was living in his cage. And the bedroom was closed with the dehumidfier running inside. I am just wrought with grief over his loss.

Dear Ruth Anne, thankyou for your question.

I am really sorry this has happened to your 6 yr old Bunny.

Bunny's are sensitive to humidity and it can be difficult to even know your bunny is having problems. Generally they become really quiet when they aren't well. Because Bunny wears a fur coat all year around it's important to keep them cool.

Obviously when all of this construction took place it let a lot of humidity and exposed mold into the home. A Very toxic combination you could not have understood would have caused your bunny to become so sick.

I need to share the following with you so it can help a future bunny.

Again,I send my sympathies but honestly I really hope you get another bunny because you are clearly a good owner who really loves them.

Thankyou & God Bless!
