Hi,
My rabbit came down with a cold. I took him to the vets and they gave him TMS an antibiotic. The order is for every 12 hours. I gave it to him on Thursday as ordered and he is still sneezing. The vet reccomended that I steam up a room and let my rabbit in for a little while. Well, I have done exactly as the vet said, but now my rabbit is sneezing constantly. It looks like the white mucus is comming out of his nose. The vet said his lungs sounded ok it was just in his nostirls. How long should will it take for the medicine to work? Should I call the vet on Monday to tell him of the excessive sneezing since I put him in the room with steam or should I give the medicine more time. I am very worried and do not want to loose another rabbit due to a cold. Please help.

Optional Information: Age: <1; Male; Breed: Dwarf Rabbit

If you have been giving the antibiotics every 12 hours as ordered, the infection may be breaking up and finally draining from his sinuses. The steam treatment also helps this process. If he is doing well otherwise (eating, drinking, etc) continue as you have. You can call your vet on Monday morning to give a progress report and see if he should go in for a recheck. If he stops eating and/or is very depressed you may want to call sooner. It may be wise to feed a probiotic while he is getting antibiotics to keep his gut flora alive and healthy.

Thank you so much for answering my question. I was so worried after the last incident with my other dwarf rabbit. All he has done is eat. I have been feeding him pellets from our vets and a lot of timothy hay. Can you get the probiotic at the local store like PetsSmart? I will continue to do the steam treatment.I have been waking up like every 4 hours to check on him. My nerves have been off the wall. I am glad to know that I will wake up and find a alive rabbit in the morning. Again, thankyou so much.

I'm glad your bunny is doing pretty well this morning. It's good to hear he is eating well too. I'm not too sure that Petsmart would carry anything for rabbits but you can ask. If there is a pet store that has lots of good stuff for small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, etc they would more likely have something, or your vet might keep some on hand. In a pinch you can get some Acidophilus capsules at the drug store and sprinkle some on his food or put some in a little dab of no-sugar-added applesauce as a treat.
