I have a four year old lop eared rabbit who has recently been diagnosed with arthritis of the spine hip and knees. He has been on Metacalm for a month but he seems to be relapsing now because since yesterday he is stretching out 1 leg straight and not bending it, this makes him twirl around in circles when trying to get out of a sitting position. he can still walk and jump. please help im worried sick. Is ther anything else I could give him? Is there such a thing as intra articular injections for animals or any disease modifying agents like there are in humans.

Yes, there are other medications you can use. One is called tramadol. It is an opiate agonist and works well in combination with Metacam. There is also a medication called Adequan which is an injectable cartilage health supplement some veterinarians are using in rabbits with bad arthritis. Another medication is called Cosequin and it is an oral cartilage health supplement. All of these are available through your veterinarian. I hope this is a helpful answer to your questions. I have seen rabbits with arthritis do very well on this combination of medications. Please let me know if you have more questions about this. Best wishes.

The best answer to any question regarding a sick pet will come from your own veterinarian, however, I am happy to provide information based on my experience.
