Male Beta illness

our male beta has a spot of scales missing on the side of his body...why is this and how can we heal this?

  How is your water quality? Do you have a filtration system? How many fish and what kind do you have in there and how big is your tank?

Thank you for the reply. There is only one beta in a one gallon tank. I do have a filter in the tank and the water that I change out or add is treated with a water conditioning treatment for Betas.
Is the spot of loss of scales common and is it treatable?
