Question

Can feline viral rhinotracheitis be transmitted to humans?

Sent to Pet Experts October 06, 2006 5:50 p.m.

Hi there. We adopted a special needs kitten 2 years ago. She was born with herpes in her eye. Her eye is constantly running and looks a little red and irritated all the time. We are wanting to start a family and worry that this may be transmittable to our baby. Can herpes in cats be transmitted to humans? Thank you so much for your time! Elisha

Optional Information:
Age: 2; Female; Breed: stray

We have not tried any kind of medication so far. We were just wondering if it can be spread to humans.

No this viral disease is strictly a feline version. The disease has the same name as it is in a similar family type of virus as the herpes viruses that impact people but they differ enough we are safe from the cat version.
You can read about the cat virus here

Hope this helps you!
