hip pain after falling over a cord.

I have a Airedale Terrior that is about ten months old. On August 26th he had an accident at home. He had fallen over and had tripped on a plug in the wall ripping it out of the wall. We didn't know if he had hurt his foot or his leg because he was limping and crying. We waited for a day to see if he felt better and then took him to the vet. She said the knee ligaments were tight and his hip only hurt if it was moved in a certain direction. She could probe it without pain but if moved he yelped. He was given rimadyl (50 milligrams ) twice a day. He has lost his appetite and is still limping. He won't lay d own .on his own sometimes. does it sound like a sprain and if so will it take a lot longer to heal. I can't afford to have him xrayed. They said they would have to put him out and it is almost $5oo.oo. Please let me know if waiting a little longer might solve the problem. Also, We stopped giving him his medicine to see if his appetite might come back. His personality has changed - he no longer acts like the mischevious puppy he once was. He is very lethargic but I understand the medicine can do that to him.

It can take some time for a sprain to heal as they are constantly using their legs for walking and weight on them can cause pressure that makes it harder to heal.If she was able to probe it without pain and she does not feel anything was broken then I would allow for as much limited movement as possible, watch for any signs of swelling, and increased pain that would be a sign that this could be more related to a hip dislocation, or a fracture which would require possible surgery. Since it has been since August 26th that has been almost 11 days so if he does not show any signs of improvement within the next day or so it does sound like more has been damaged then a sprain. Try to feed a bland diet of cooked rice and/or boiled chicken or beef which is more tolerable to the stomach with the Rimadyl as he does need this to help with his pain and inflammation and without it he may not show any improvement that could help you to know if further treatment is needed or not. Always feed him first then allow 30 minutes for the food to settle then give him the Rimadyl as this is a anti-inflammatory and is needed to allow for improvement and to give him relief that he much needs for the pain.
