Question

vomiting a yellow foamy substance

Sent to Pet Experts August 22, 2006 1:40 p.m.

my toy poodle, 6 lbs, is vomiting a yellow foamy substance a couple of times a day. We feed her Innova gold(leave food down for her to eat at will) and Science Diet Canine TD for treats, also a few tidbits from the table. She often vomits early in the morning, but can also be any time. Her brother is on the same diet and doesn't seem to have the same problem. Someone told me I could give her tums. Is this OK? Is there something better (Mylanta?) and how much would I give her?

Hi,

Well before starting her on a treatment you really need to determine the cause. The yellow bile is from irritation to her stomach. It appears she may be having a allergic reaction to something she is eating.

I would recommend cutting out table scraps and the snacks temporarily and starting her on Science diet for sensitive stomachs. Allow her to eat this alone for a week and if the vomiting ceases slowly introduce science diet snacks if she continues to have no problems then it may have simply been a allergic reaction to the food.

I would recommend staying away from the table scraps altogether as they are to rich for her system and may be causing the problem. If you must use a medication you can give her 1 teaspoon of Pepto Bismol Per ten pounds of body weight.

Walter
