Hi! This sounds like rain rot. Do you live in a very humid State? This is typically caused by a bacteria that lives in the soil and loves humid conditions. The best way to treat this is brush the horses down. Then wash them carefully with a betadine soap. Let it stay on the horse for 5-7 minutes, rinse off totally. Walk horses totally dry. Then make a mixture of mineral oil and iodine 50/50. Mix. Using large cotton balls, soak the area and let dry. This should do it. You may have to repeat if the weather gets very humid or rains. Watch for one week. And add mixture again if necessary. But that should be all you need to do. Also you could add coat supplements to their daily grain. August it the very WORSE month for this. Another solution that helps, is to apply a "Tinacton" type fungal ointment, cover with 4X4 gauze pads. Follow with a light leg wrap. This works much better at night.
