The only way to really determine if the mold is truly "black mold" is to have it tested. I had the same situation and had to move out of the house. After they tested it, it was indeed "black mold". As you have probably read on many of the web sites it can be very toxic depending on the quantity in the home.
Most people have to move out of their homes, while the mold is removed, which usually means the area has to be torn out, and reconstructed. Some situations can be done by covering the area in a dome shaped cover and chemically killing the mold.
I would suggest that you definetly contact your local "Health Department" and have the mold tested so that you know what you are dealing with, as it could effect your health as well as the "culprit" for your animals.
