Question

Black mold

Sent to Pet Experts August 16, 2006 9:57 p.m.

we moved into a new build home last fall- I continually called for assistance from the builder because of leaking into my basement. The fifth time someone came out they discovered that the shower pan was leaking the entire 9+ months that we have lived here and entire shower floor under the pan is filled with black mold. With the research that has been done on this, is this what could have killed my boxer? His lungs were filled with cancer and the origination of the cancer could not be found.Would you know the answer or know where I could look for the information?

Hello,

Thank you for sending your question to Just Answer!

The only way to really determine if the mold is truly "black mold" is to have it tested. I had the same situation and had to move out of the house. After they tested it, it was indeed "black mold". As you have probably read on many of the web sites it can be very toxic depending on the quantity in the home.

Most people have to move out of their homes, while the mold is removed, which usually means the area has to be torn out, and reconstructed. Some situations can be done by covering the area in a dome shaped cover and chemically killing the mold.

I would suggest that you definetly contact your local "Health Department" and have the mold tested so that you know what you are dealing with, as it could effect your health as well as the "culprit" for your animals.

I hope this helps. If you need further information, please feel to contact me.
