Injured mare
Sent to Pet Experts July 21 12:37 PM

I have a mare that has (apparently) stepped on herself and the wound is like an upside down "U" on the front of her right rear cannon, above the hock. Unfortunately, I did not discover it until 1-2 days later and the "flap" created by the shape of the wound was already drying around the edges and assumed too late for sutures. I have been cleaning this wound daily and dressing it with a lanolin based antibacterial cream. I was advised not to bind it, as it was discovered late and could seal in dirt or infection. It has been over a week now and no swelling, heat or sign of infection is present. My question is: what do I do (if anything) about this flap of skin that remains. Also, is there a better treatment that you could suggest for this type of injury? She is spooky and somewhat resistant to much more than what I have done already. To complicate it further, she is bred and I don't want to upset her pregnancy. Any advice would be welcome.

Hello,

Thank you for sending your question to Just Answer!

I can help with your care that you need to provide your mare. First, the excess skin will dry up and drop off. New skin will grow to cover the wound.

Your most important thing you need to be doing (and you mentioned you are providng this) is making sure the wound stays clean. For cleaning and for help in healing the wound, I would hydro the wound for about 20 minutes per day. Water is a wonder drug for wounds. While running water on the area, see if you can clean it with Betadine Solution and after you rinse it off, make sure it is dry before applying an antibiotic ointment. You need to be sure you don't get "proud flesh" so I like to mix Betadine ointment and Furisin mixed together.

If you see any greenish discharge from the wound, you will need to treat it as an infection and get her on some antibiotics. Sounds like you are keeping it clean and hopefully with this information, you won't see an infection.
