Question

Mare wounded

Sent to Pet Experts July 12, 2006 7:42 p.m.

I know this is a double post. I requested michaelsmom on the other, do not report as duplicate, I want two opinions.

My mare was hurt yesterday when when our stud tried to mount her and a nail from one of his shoes cut her hindquarter open. This was the first time he has been around her since the colt was born, and obviously was a little overenthusiastic. We have them seperated now. The cut is about 4 or 5 inches wide and about 2 inches high. We put cut heal first aide spray on it, on advice of our friend who we'd gotten her from. He's also advising pennicillen shots, and to keep the wound exposed. What is your advice for care and possible pain management?

Optional Information:
Age: 4; Female; Breed: American Saddlebred

How deep is the wound? If you keep it open you are most likely going to end up with a wound full of maggots. Therefore you need to keep it flushed and really clean. Gentian Violet will help to dry it. Has she had a tetanus shot as well? I would definitely go the penicillin route also. I am not familiar with the cut heal- what is in it? Also, how old is the colt and is he still nursing?

Hi Joni,

Thanks for answering, will maggots go in the wound, i thought they only went into dead things? The spray we use is a wound srpay for horses, its red like iodine.

Where would I get gentian violet? Should it be covered?

We're going to get the penicillin from the feed and seed tomorrow. I've never give a horse a shot, anything I should know?

The colt was born april 25, she does seem to still nurse a little, but not much (that i've seen)

Flies will lay eggs in any open wound and then you'll have maggots. If you keep it flushed you'll be fine. It sounds like the wound spray you are using is fine. My main concern- other than the maggots, is if it is deep enough to require sutures. Then I asked about the foal nursing from a pain management concern as you do not want the foal to get any of those meds. If it is not gaping she probably does not need any pain meds. You need to be very careful with the penicillin injections. They must go deep in the muscle and if you get it IV you will kill the horse. You must aspirate to be 100% sure. I feel sure Marie will give you full details and I will let her since you requested her. I will be more than happy though to answer anything else though so just let me know. I also will be delighted to go into specifics on the injection as well.
