Hi, I looked at the wound very carefully, and I also see there is another scar similar about 4 inches away. This wound needs to be cleaned and dressed every day. Wash your hands. I would have someone hold the horse and gently shave the fur away from the wound using saline baths to keep dirt and hair from wound. Up to you. Then I take 5 X 7 or 8 X 10 Gauge pads and do this. Clean area with betadine or saline. Don't touch wound. I use a triple-antibacterial cream, applie with small gauze, no fingers. Cover with first gauze, tape. Take two more. Third outside one, spray with Avon Skin so soft. Middle cloth is buffer. Tape. No flies, heals great and get tetanus shot. Give another shot PN because it is summer and all sorts of stuff is going around. Watch wound for maggots since it has been open, get twissors and pull them off. Rinse with betadyne several times, it will kill the remaining eggs. Watch every day till heals.
If you need me please find me. If you have any other questions, please ask me!!! Hugs M

Yes, he was mounting her and I believe the first scratch was from the same nail...you can see the other marks where his hooves scraped her. We never expected him to go so wild, and it took us two hours to get him away from her. They're in seperate areas now, which we'll keep them that way until we're ready to breed, then only under supervision.
Thanks for the help. I have some people telling me to keep it open but rinsed and others telling me to cover it. Will covering impede the healing? __________________ If this has helped, remember to click the green accept button. Chase, you are in Georgia. The fly factor, bugs and bacteria is asking for a serious infection. NO you never leave a wound open for flies to lay eggs, maggots from the blow fly can hatch in 6 hours and now you have a bigger problem. Then along comes the bot fly, and lays more eggs that go directly into the blood stream, and now you have worms eating the horses stomach from the outside in. And if the screw fly shows up, you can kiss your horse good bye without antibiotics. Now let's try all the bacterias that are just air borne. If your child had an open cut, would you not treat it and cover it? Why would your horse be any different? Please clean this wound, keep it covered and sterile. And pull the shoes off the stud and put a breeding halter/muzzel and lead on him. If he gets so carried away, yank him off and make sure he does not hurt her. She doesn't deserve to be hurt. And this wound is a breeding ground for serious infection. I've been doing this since I was 8 years old, I would never give you bad advise. If you have any other questions, please ask. I will always try to help you. Marie
