Question

Diarrhea and Vomiting

Sent to Pet Experts July 11, 2006 8:33 a.m.

My bichon frise began having diarrhea on 7/10/06 when I came home from work. This morning 7/11/06 he had additional diarrhea and also vomiting. He is acting very normal behaviorial wise and seems to want to eat etc. He diet is IAMS lamb & rice which is a dry dog food and some IAMS Sauce on it. He also gets dog treats. Once in a while I will give him a bit of steak mixed into his dry dog food.

What could be causing this?

Please advise. Thank you.

Dear friend,

Your boy has a severe digestive upset If you juust opened a new bag of food or got down to the bottom of a bag it could be related to that. Sometimes mold can form on the bottom of new food can be a bad batch. If you gave him steak with garlic or onion seasoning - he could have a bad reaction to that. If he has been to the dog park or groomer there is a strain of canine flu going around.

Youn can give him two teaspoons of pepto bismal every six hours to setttle his stomach. Additionally, take him off all dog food for 48 hours. Feed him only cottage cheese or boied chicken or chop meat with all fat drained off and a little cooked white rice. Give him one teaspoon of plain yogurt a day to put good bacteria back in his system. Replace his water with unflavoved pedialyte to replace his electrolytes.

If he does not improve as a result of these measures he may have dog flu or pancreatitis and should see his vet.

Please let me know how he is and if you have any further questions. I will be happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri
