Question

my little bunny died and I am so sad

Sent to Pet Experts July 02, 2006 7:36 p.m.

Hi. I had an adorable dwarf female and she was black and white, very spunky. I got her a playmate but as time passed fighting ensued. I got the playmate a new home and kept the little one. It was highly destructive to my home, furniture, carpets, drapes and clothing. Periods of weeks and even a month or so I could not catch the rascal. So I had it for 3. 5 years and it passed away Sat AM. I saw discharge in it's eye the night before but did not feel it was going to be so serious. I had kept it cagebound for the past 8 months or so, I feel awful and my other pets are depressed. We loved the bunny, do you think it would have survived if I had taken it to the emergency room that night? Do you think caging it for so long contributed? It was in my living room. Thank you.

I am very sorry for your loss. It is hard to say if taking her in the night before would have helped. A slight discharge isn't a major sign of alarm. I am thinking he probably had something brewing for a while. Signs would have been weight loss...soft or hard stools...decrease in appetite. Without a necropsy (exam of her body by your vet), you may never know. You also have to take into consideration if you got her as an adult, her age...their lifespan is roughly 5-7 years on the average so she may have been geriatric if she was an adult. Again I am very sorry for your loss.

Thanks for the reply I got her as a baby and I felt I needed to protect her from getting into the wrong hands. Now I feel so awful, but still I bet my home was better than where else she may have landed. Yes I am considering an negraphy to find out and as you say I think I was not realizing she was so sick as she was not allowed to take the run of my new home, but I feel responsible for her. I had a fan intermittantly on her when the air was off in the evening. People tell me that 2 to 3 years is normal lifespan for them being so little, I know this is not technically true but I live in the Palm Springs, California area and the heat takes its toll on all of us. Thanks much.
