Found a red external lump size of a nickel with black ...

Sent to Pet Experts May 20 02:09 PM

Found a red external lump size of a nickel with black spots, on elbow of my German shepherd. I have been told that it could be an infection due to a dead tick stuck there. Other info has me swabbing it with an water/aspirin/rubbing alcohol "cocktail." Any other thoughts?

Optional Information:
Age: 2; Female; Breed: German Shepherd

Already Tried:
Cotton swab of water, aspirin, rubbing alcohol mixture.

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy),

No self-respecting tick is going to go after an elbow. If it did, they fall off when they die. (and they don't have a head).

So, this may be an irritation and protective reaction to pressure. Is there a sharp bony area under, or very close to it, that puts this spot right between 'a bone and a hard place'? Right behind, or under, the elbow is the usual place for pressure hygromas, but the outside of the elbow is also a spot to see calluses. Dogs tend to have different ways to lay on the floor, so we can expect to see them most anywhere.

The black spots may be like blackheads, but I can't see them from here. Your alcohol cocktail should have removed them by now.

The cocktail you are using is probably to soften any calloused tissue (the aspirin part). And the redness would be due to irritation.

If this is on the mark, then treatment is to get her to lay somewhere softer, possibly a rug. (But rugs are warmer, and this may be why she is on hard floor). Or lay in a different position.

If this is a miss, we'll start over on a different path.

I apologize as I must start over. The location was wrong; it's on a rear leg just above the knee joint. This area normally doesn't touch any surface.

The dark black spots are about 1/8" in diameter and are flush with the surface. The lighter black area covers most of the top part of the bump.

I will check tonight to see how the first application of the cocktail has worked.

Thank you.

Tracy
