Sleeping arrangements

Sent to Pet Experts September 21 05:25 PM

My Dachshund is 6 months old. Since we got him we have put in a play pen when it time for bed and when we are not home. We have a bed and chew toys in there for him. So far things are going okay. He does not cry when it's time for bed but sometimes he cries when he is the Pen and we are home. Someone told me that it is unhealthy to let the dog sleep in a different room from the owner. Is that true? Would it be better for the Dog to sleep in my bedroom while in the Pen? Or does it matter one way or the other.?

I have never heard that it is unhealthy for a dog not to sleep with
the owners. My Beagle puppy sleeps in a crate in the garage and
does just fine. Keeping him in a puppy pen is a great idea and
he will get used to being alone. Just do not give him attention
when he cries. Ignore him (as hard as it may be) and he will
learn that crying is a waste of his time and gets him no where.
This is all normal puppy behavior.
