i have a 3 week old chihuahua how do i know if he is eating enough

my mother's in ICU. and her chihuahua had six puppies i had to place the mother with her babies in order for them to feed, other wise she did not want to be bothered this is my mother's baby's 4 litter but the first since she has owned the mother. I figured she was all tuckered out and has no interest in feeding appropriately. so im doing my best to be a a mommie replacement. it's so hard to hear them cry because their hungry i had to do something. i went to petsmart and got advice and the bottles with puppie formula...He is rather greedy and i do know they should not eat more than every three hours. he eats alittle over a half an oz for a total of 1 1/2 oz a day.
