my year old lab have just been diagnosed with bone cancer

My 8 year old Lab have just been diagnosed with bone cancer. It is in his pelvic bone. His back right leg is lame. We noticed him limping and crying in pain 1 month ago but as we think back it may have started bothering him about a month before that. How long do they ususally live with that type of cancer. I know we will have to put him "to sleep" at some point but how do we know when?
