Let them have the usual run of the house one at a time and keep the other in a crate or playpen. Let them get used to each other's smells and to seeing each other around. A bath in the usual shampoo you use with the new dog may help reduce tension.
Usually the resident dog will show its dominance and the new dog will submit and all will be well. Sometimes the new dog is bigger or more dominant and will take over as the leader. Sometimes there is a lot of noise and spit exchanged before the dogs can be friends.

Hope this helps you!

How do I test the waters with confidence that my resident dog is not REALLY going to hurt the 1.5lb puppy?

I'd keep them under close supervision in a room with you. Make sure the pup has some places it can hide if need be.
You can start out with the adult dog on a leash or dragging a leash so you have a quick method of bringing them apart if need be.
Most dog fights are just spit and noise and baby pups scream to tell the other dog they give up not because they were really hurt. The squeal should make the older dog back off.
