My 10 year old female cocker was house broken to the yard, now we live in an apartment. I have tried crating her, I take her out 6 or 7 times a day, and she still pees on the rug almost daily. She is also very thirsty. Could she have a medical condition causing frequent urination or am I just a wuss? My husband says if I left her in the crate 8 hours a day every day she would learn to "hold it". I haven't found a job yet, so I'm home with her all day.

Optional Information: Age: 10; Female; Breed: Tiny cockerspaniel

There could be a couple of things going on. I would be concerned about diabetes or a thyroid condition that might be causing the increased thirst and urination. At this age, it's definitely a possibility.

You will also see some inappropriate urination if there has been a spinal injury or there is spinal pain (from arthritis, etc).

At this age, there are many things that can go wrong, unfortunately.

Stones or urinary "sand" can be the cause of undiagnosed urinary disorders. UTI's are also common. A culture can rule this out. I would look more closely at diabetes and thyroid conditions as the cause.

Let me know if you still have questions.
